How To Inspect A Used Car

There are many steps that a buyer should consider and follow when inspecting a used car.  First, the respective buyer should check the used car history report. The report may not give you hundred percent guarantees on the car being perfect, but it is still worth money spent. A history report can help to uncover the problems that the car might had faced in the past like accidents, rolled back odometer, rental use, flood damage and so on.

Almost all vehicles have problems and weak spots depending on the made and model of the car. Before going for a test drive, it is advice able to do a research on common problems and complains. The buyer can check the enthusiasts’ forums, owner reviews, websites like NHTSA and other resources as well. This research can give a good idea on problems that are being faced by other car owners and the things that need to be paid attentions during a test drive.

A buyer should prepare few things when inspecting a used car. A buyer should take a paper and pen to make notes on every used car that is being checked and note down the price, mileage, car features, likes and dislikes. The notes will help in the selection process in the final deal of negotiation. The other thing that is needed is printed copy of used car checklist. A flashlight can also be very handy when checking for leaks, corrosion and under the hood. A small magnet can help to find hidden repaired of corrosion spots. CD disk is needed to check the stereo and paper towel to check the engine oil or transmission oil.

A buyer should pay attention to the windshield for chips, cracks, scratches and other damages. Some large enough chips, cracks and scratches can cause the vehicle to fail a safety inspection. Moreover windshield is quite expensive to be replaced.  Usually, a very small crack can expand later on. Scratches on the windshield can produce annoying glare at the night. When the wiper rubber blades disintegrate, the wiper’s metal part can also cause scratch to the windshield.

Tires should also be inspected. Tires should be from well known reputable brands like Michelin, Goodyear, and Bridgestone. The tread wear should be inspected as well. The tires must be replaced if there are any mechanical damages like cuts, cracks, bubbles and etc. The wear pattern should be inspected as it could lead to suspension or alignment problems.

The vehicle interior should also be checked during used car’s inspection. All seat belts and driver seat should be checked as well. All doors must be checked by trying to lock and unlock the driver and passenger doors with the key. The spare tire, wheel wrench and the jack should be inspected. If the spare tire is located underneath the car, the holding mechanism should be checked if it is working properly. This is because holding mechanism can be get corroded and seizes up.

It is very important to check the heater and air conditioner. An air conditioner should be checked by starting the engine and let it warm up for a few minutes. Then the A/C is turn on. The air conditioner should start immediately after on, unless it is very cold outside the car. If the air conditioner doesn’t start, then it must be checked for problems.
